Main places

  • Cape St. Vincent + Lighthouse

Continental Europe's southwest tip (Cabo da Roca is further west). Lighthouse active since 1846, with the largest optic in use in Portugal — visible from 60 nautical miles. The Romans called it Promontorium Sacrum. Cliffs ~70 m high. Sunset is the ritual moment to be there.

  • Fortaleza de Sagres + Rosa dos Ventos

Headland fortress walled in the 15th century, tied to Prince Henry the Navigator. Inside, the Rosa dos Ventos — a 43-metre stone wind-rose paving, only excavated in 1919, whose function is still debated (sundial? compass? ritual marker?). The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça and the cliff-top trail round out the visit.

  • Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Vila do Bispo)

Church from the late 15th–16th c., entirely rebuilt in 1663 when Vila do Bispo was raised to vila status by King Afonso VI. The nave is lined with blue-and-white azulejo panels from 1726, with water-pot and dolphin motifs, and a painted wooden ceiling.

  • Praia da Mareta (Sagres)

Sagres' urban beach — ~800 m of sand sheltered between two headlands. The classic swimming pick: calmer than the western beaches, restaurants on the sand, surf schools for beginners. A 5-min walk from the centre of Sagres.

  • Praia do Tonel

West-facing beach in Sagres, fully exposed to the Atlantic — Sagres' best-known surf beach for its consistent swell, which draws surfers year-round. Yellow cliffs, strong undertow, NW wind in summer. Watch the flags on big-sea days.

  • Praia do Beliche

Small cove between Cape St. Vincent and the Sagres headland, framed by 40-metre vertical walls. Often voted the area's most beautiful beach; relatively sheltered when the wind blows from NW, well suited to intermediate surfers. Access via stairs from the cliff-top car park.

  • Castelejo and Cordoama beaches

The western edge of the council, inside the Vicentina Coast Natural Park — huge sands, schist cliffs, big waves and no development. Cordoama has the highest cliff-top viewpoint. Both reached by an unsealed road from Vila do Bispo.

  • Salema

Whitewashed fishing village in Budens parish, in the south of the council — one of the most authentic and quiet on the Algarve. Small urban beach with sheltered sea, fish restaurants and a coastal trail to Boca do Rio (a Roman archaeological site).

Good questions

Is Cape St. Vincent the westernmost point of continental Europe?
It's the southwesternmost point — Cabo da Roca, in Sintra, is the truly westernmost, by about half a degree of longitude. But Cape St. Vincent is the more dramatic headland, with ~70 m cliffs, a working lighthouse since 1846 and Portugal's largest optic in use (visible from 60 nautical miles). To the Romans it was the Promontorium Sacrum, the sacred headland at the edge of the known world.
When is the Sagres Birdwatching Festival?
The next edition runs from 2 to 5 October 2026 in Sagres. More than 160 scheduled activities: field trips, boat tours, ringing sessions, talks and workshops. It's Portugal's biggest bird-watching event, timed to coincide with the southbound migration of soaring birds heading to Africa. The 2025 edition drew 1,300 participants.
Which beach in Sagres is best to learn surfing?
Praia da Mareta — sheltered between two headlands, sandy bottom, smaller waves, several surf schools right on the sand. To level up, Beliche has consistent waves at moderate size. Tonel only with a solid level: west-facing, it takes the Atlantic swell head-on. The Vicentina Coast beaches (Castelejo, Cordoama) have big waves and strong rip currents — only with an experienced instructor.
