Galeria Viva ODS Alcoutim

The municipality of Alcoutim is a partner in the Interreg project for the certification of Alcoutim as a Sustainable Destination. The process is being carried out in partnership with Biosphere, an international reference entity in tourism sustainability certification — and is in its final phase.

The Biosphere Sustainable certification was born from a Memorandum of Understanding with UNESCO, being a founding member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). It certifies destinations and organizations through a continuous improvement process towards Horizon 2030, aligned with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and the 169 targets of the 2030 Agenda. Alcoutim will thus follow in the footsteps of destinations like Mértola, the first certified Sustainable Tourism Destination by Biosphere in Alentejo, in January 2026.

Raising awareness in the local community is a fundamental pillar of the certification process. This activity directly responds to this requirement, creating a moment of genuine participation and collective knowledge building about sustainability — with the community as the protagonist, not just as an audience.

GALERIA VIVA ODS ALCOUTIM The Galeria Viva ODS Alcoutim is a community participation activity built collectively with the community, by the community, and for the community. On June 20, the Castle of Alcoutim and the town center will transform into a living and interactive gallery about sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The differentiation of this proposal lies in the fact that it is built in advance with the community, in three preparatory meetings, and on the day itself, participants act as facilitators of the different ODS stations, making Alcoutim a destination where sustainability is lived and not just declared.

The activity is aimed at the broader community of the municipality of Alcoutim.

In the first phase, all groups are invited to participate in the preparatory community sessions; those who cannot do so will be mobilized for the final activity on June 20, ensuring that no actor from the territory is left out of this collective process of building a shared vision for local sustainability.
